Published on The Daily Guardian Why fish is the right choice for India

On 6th November, our co-founder Shailesh Patel wrote an article in The Daily Guardian about the nutritional benefits of fish & why it is the right choice for India. Here is what the article touched on:

India has a vast coastline and for centuries fishing has been a part of the economy and fish has been part of the Indian diet in coastal regions like Bengal, Kerala, and Goa. If you plan on starting a balanced diet, then fish is a great option.

Protein Powerhouse

One of the main reasons that fish has a great reputation is because of its high protein content and low fat content. In a country like India where protein deficiency is extremely common this superfood can address the issue.

Rich in Omega 3 fatty acids

The Indian diet in vegetarian-dominant regions lacks omega-3 fatty acids. However, the dilemma is that omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for heart and brain health. Fatty fish like Mackarel (Bangda), Sardines (Pedvey), and Salmon are becoming common in the urban markets of the country. This means that the Indian consumer is getting informed about the potential health benefits of eating fish.

A Complete Package

At least, 47% of adults in India suffer from Vitamin B12 deficiency. Such a huge amount indicates a serious problem that needs to be resolved. Luckily, fish is the complete package of vitamin D and B-complex vitamins like B12.

Vitamin D deficiency is also extremely common in the country and the vitamin D found in fish can improve bone health, immune function, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. On the other hand, B12 supports nerve function and red blood cell formation. Together, both these vitamins are a powerful combination. Fish ensures that you get both of them as per your needs.

Fish is also a great source of minerals like iodine, selenium, and zinc. Iodine is important to balance the thyroid function found in seafood, while selenium works as a powerful antioxidant. Zinc supports your body’s immune system and promotes wound healing.
Fish being packed with proteins, vitamins, and essential minerals makes it a nutritional goldmine that needs to be a part of your diet.

A Sustainable Choice for India

In recent years, animal farming has come under criticism from environmentalists. It is not seen as sustainable because it is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases and more than three-quarters of global agricultural land is used for livestock production.

With growing demands for sustainability, attention has shifted towards aquaculture. This shift ensures a steady supply of nutritious fish to the people but also reduces pressure on wild fish stocks, making it an eco-friendly protein source.

Incorporating fish into the daily diet is an excellent way for Indians to meet their protein and nutritional needs. Whether enjoyed in a curry, grilled, or lightly fried, fish remains a nutritional goldmine that can benefit the health of the entire family. At Dam Good Fish, we believe that this is just the beginning of the blue revolution in India. As long as people want sustainable nutrition, we are here to deliver on our promise of delivering fresh fish everyday.
